In April, cute hubby and I along with several other couples from church went to the Love Worth Fighting For Marriage Event, featuring Kirk Cameron and Warren Barfield. It was OUTSTANDING! Both men were funny and had many wise words to share. Kirk, unlike the rest of the world, looks exactly the same as when he was on Growing Pains, what....30 years ago?! He has not aged one bit!! Warren is from our area of the planet and is a super funny dude!! We related to him a whole lot, because he and his wife worked hard to destroy each other, just like we did. Until God stepped in, and now they are awesome, just like us! :) The one thing that stuck with me the very most was when Kirk asked everyone.... What is the #1 problem in your marriage? Folks hollered out the normal things you hear.....communication - money - kids - the mother n law - jobs - you know the list. Then he said.....what if I told you that all of those issues come from...... Selfishness? Yep, selfishness.....marinate on that for a while. It is true, oh so painfully true. Me me me...what about me and what I feel and think and want??? Here is the definition straight out of Webster - concerned excessively or exclusively with oneself : seeking or concentrating on one's own advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others. Was Jesus selfish?? Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2: 3 - 4 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. James 3:16 He who separates himself seeks his own desire, He quarrels against all sound wisdom. Proverbs 18:1 As I sit and breath and love me some chocolate, I tell you IT IS the pure truth!
Hard truth to swallow for certain! Cute hubby and I learned this years ago as we tried so hard to destroy each other. We hit rock bottom, the complete and total abyss. Abyss as defined by Dictionary.com - a deep, immeasurable space, gulf, or cavity; vast chasm. It was miserable, I wanted to die. We finally cried out to God and He scooped us right up, doctored us up and made us better! Was is quick and easy? Heck no! Far from it....it was long, very long and so painful. We called it the desert roller coaster. When God is working on you and you are trying to repair your relationship, there must be a whole bunch of self examination....you will be humbled! This is the point we realized that everything boiled down to being selfish. OUCH! Sister....today won't you look inside, examine yourself, give up your selfish thoughts and wants? Put others first, but most especially your hubby! He is a most great and precious gift from our Papa for you to have and to hold while you are here for a short time on this earth.
